This New Mexico church is from dede’s Needleworks (a newer version is available as part of a new club from Twisted Stitches). The background is in a lovely Persian Blue wool. I love the color contrast between this rich blue and the terra cotta color of the church. The blue really sets off the rustic church.
Medium to dark colors can be interesting choices for backgrounds, but you need to be aware of some things. Most importantly, textured stitches will be less obvious as your color gets darker. This means that often the work you do making the stitch is lost. Secondly, bits of your canvas may show through the stitches, something I call needlepoint dandruff. You can minimize this before stitching by coloring the canvas in a lighter version of the background color.
Cashmere Checker is created by alternating between individual Cashmeres and blocks of Tent.
More background ideas coming in December. Next week starts the Erica Wilson Stitch-along.
