Laidwork can be fantastic for backgrounds. It’s easier to do than you think. The first step is to ly down long stitches going from end to end of an area. These laid stitches are tied down with other stitches.
For this background, on Pretzel Dog from KCN Designers, I used an unidentified rayon and metallic thread. It’s called Laid Columns and is diagrammed below. Sets of three vertical laid stitches make the columns. They are tied down by sets of three diagonal stitches.
