This simple pattern is a laid stitch, a technique called Laidwork, that creates stripes it’s a lovely pattern. In laid stitches, long stitches are laid down, in one or more directions, and shorter stitches are made over these stitches tying them down in a specific pattern. Although in this sampler the stitch is made with a single thread, it looks lovely in two threads.
Some laid stitches have the entire grid stitched first. With others, each row is stitched separately. This stitch can be made either way. The laid threads are in every other column of holes. Trios of straight stitches over two threads cover the laid stitches. The trios alternate between rows.
I learned this stitch in a class taught by Brenda Hart on a Lee kimono. It’s called Brebda;s Kimono Stitch, below. I stitched this patch using Planet Earth Silk.
i’m waiting for some threads to arrive, but I hope to have a new background stitch next Sunday.
