The final pink (grapefruit) patch is stitched in an open Tent Stitch pattern from Whimsical Stitches vol. 2. It’s made up of square boxes of Tent, with lines connecting each square. I stitched it in the matching color of Planet Earth 6-strand Silk.
The stitch is called Whimsical Big Grid, and it’s diagrammed below.
Tent Stitch patterns such as this one or many of the needlepoint damask patterns can make fantastic backgrounds. If you are stuck for a background, think about these. If you stitch them, as I did here, in a solid thread matching the canvas, you’ll find a gentle pattern. Colors that are close but nit exactly like the canvas and semi-solid threads nearly matching, add slightly more interest. Colors farther away create effects similar to printed fabric.
Next week we’ll start on a new color in the citrus sampler with another great background idea.
