Contessa is a lovely thread from Fabulous Fibers. I recently learned about it and wanted to let you know about this lovely thread quickly because currently, it’s on sale with limited quantities available. That’s because the thread is being discontinued.
The thread is a blend (88% rayon, 12% silk) that creates a soft silky thread. It comes in 10-yard cards. The thread is six very thin strands that can be separated with a bit of difficulty. The company describes the threads this way, “contessa is a silky fiber that will create a soft finish to any needlepoint or embroidery project.” Currently, there are more than 20 colors available.
Because the strands of this thread are not even and are a bit rough, the strands can be difficult to separate. The full strand is just a bit thicker than a full strand of floss, although the individual strands are thinner. I found it easiest to start this by using the tip of a fine needle to tease out a strand. Then I could grasp and pull the strand to thin the strand.
Initially, I tried using the full strand on my18-mesh bunny, front of bunny above, and found it a bit too thick. I found 4 strands, which you see on the back and head of the bunny, worked perfectly for me. My suggestion is that you use the same number of strands as you would with floss and adjust up or down as needed.
Because the thread is being discontinued, the stock of many colors is low, but the main page does not tell you the quantities. Choose the color you want from the drop-down box and the picture changes to that color. Enter the number of cards you want. The “add to cart” button is light until you mouse over it. If your selected number of cards is not available a pop-up box appears telling you that the desired number of skeins is not available. Change the number of skeins until you are able to click on the “add to cart” button.
I love this thread so much I’m stocking up.
