Have you sometimes wondered why you keep seeing these inanimate objects with smiles and button eyes all around you? Do you find yourself wondering what is going on?
The trend is called Kawaii (a Japanese word meaning “cute”) and since beginning in Japan it has become popular world-wide. Although there are many styles of Kawaii, this kind, the “food with face,” is by far the easiest to translate to needlework.
Wild Olive created a charming set of Kawaii patterns for Rosh Hashanah that are free to download. Craft Gossip has an additional article with more background behind this holiday.
You can use some of these patterns for other projects. The apple could be the basis for a cute baby project. Add a big “A” to make it an “A is for apple” design. The onion could be a small project for a kitchen or an ornament for a cook. The honey pot would also make a great kitchen piece. And, if you removed the horizontal lines in the honey server you could make the design into a jam jar with a spoon.
Then you could go on and find other food outlines to adorn with faces. How fun is that?
