Laid Stitches are one of those techniques mistakenly thought of as advanced. Often they are more open than regular stitches, but having this second layer can also give you better coverage and also gives you a great chance to add color, texture, and complexity to your stitching.
Learning laid stitches isn’t hard to do, but if you look you won’t find tons of information about them. That’s about to change with my newest 25 Stitches class, 25 Laid Stitches.
What Is a Laid Stitch?
These stitches have a layer of longer stitches underneath the top decorative stitching. In virtually all laid stitches, except tramme, you see the laid stitch.
These long stitches go from edge to edge of your area and can be in one or more directions. Then these laid stitches are tied down with more stitches that are done in a specific pattern.
Depending on the stitch you will stitch row by row, laying down a stitch and then tying it, or pass by pass, laying down all the stitches and them making all the ties. Once you know which method to use for that particular stitch, laid stitches are not harder than any other stitch.
You’ll love the look. Depending on the thread and stitch you use they can make great backgrounds or focal points. The stitches can be open or give full coverage, they can be simple or complex.
