I first encountered this lovely geometric stitch in college when I made a floor pillow using just this stitch, quickpoint canvas, and three shades of wool rug yarn. I fell in love with the great geometry of this stitch and how easy it was to do.
Several years passed and I encountered Norwich Stitch, another easy stitch with a great geometric look. In the 1980’s Needlepointers, ANG’s magazine, had several free ornaments featuring this stitch.
I was confused. Both stitches were easy, both created diamonds on top of squares, both gave me a great geometric look. Were they the same stitch?
I’m not the only one who is confused.
Debbie Rowley, in a recent post, deciphers Waffle/Norwich for us and shows us how to make both diamond and square versions of the stitch.
