Are you looking for a great needlepoint gift? Are you short on time? You’ll love the needlepoint business card case from Needlepoint for Fun.
The four designs in this line premiered earlier this month. They come as kits with everything you need (painted canvas, threads, needle and case) in one package for just $25.
The case is hard on three sides with a slightly softer front that has an opening in it. Unlike many of these openings, usually made to hold photos, this one has a deep enough pocket to fit needlepoint.
Stitching the Case
Because the opening is small (under 1.5 inches square), the canvas is also small, even with generous margins. It will not fit on even the smallest stretcher bars. I was concerned about this because I was afraid the needlepoint would distort. But the canvas is so small and quick to complete, that the canvas remained straight in spite of being stitched in hand.
The product page says that silk or cotton threads are included, but there is no option to choose. My case came with Vineyard Silk threads. There was plenty for stitching the glass in Basketweave and the background in Alternating Gobelin Stripe. I had thread leftover, but not much.
The painted canvas had a one-thread black border around it. Because I was worried about distortion, I stitched over this with the background thread. I’m glad I did because placement of the needlepoint to have the border show would be difficult.
Finishing the Case
Finishing the case was easy. Using the clear square sized to fit the opening, I trimmed the canvas. Then I tried to insert it into the opening. It was too large, so I trimmed off one thread on each size to make it fit.
The needlepoint is a snug fit in the opening. I found it easiest to insert it enough so the edge of the canvas could be seen in the opening, then I pulled from the front of the case to put the needlepoint firmly in place.
I wasn’t careful about how I oriented the needlepoint, which makes a difference with this canvas, so I had to remove it, turn it, and then insert it. It’s a testament to the sturdiness of this case that this process did not make the front too soft.
Finally I inserted the plastic cover over the needlepoint to protect it. In a little more than 3 hours, from unpacking the kit, I have a lovely case, ready to keep or give as a gift.
