Recently Red Gate Stitchery expanded their offerings to include magnetic needleminders. The designs are charming and effective minders with features that are different from many other magnets out there.
The most unusual aspect is the magnet on the back. it’s flatter than most and sits inside a square metal backing. This protects the magnet. Unusually though these squares may make the backing larger than the front. If you are like me and park magnets on the back of your work, you’ll appreciate that the backing makes it easy to remove the needles.
Another nice thing is that with the backing you will never have to wonder if you have flipped the backing magnet the wrong way.
The fronts are metal so they do not have to have magnets on them. This makes them among the flattest magnets around. I like that because it makes it very hard to catch your threads on the magnet. In addition needles will not fall off the top and get stuck under the top and against the thicker magnet.
The one disadvantage I found with these minders is that they can be a bit hard to move around your canvas. Because I like to keep my magnets far from my stitching, I move them a fair amount as I stitch. I had to be more careful about this than with other minders. I suspect it’s because it is not two magnets binding together. For me this is a small price to pay for these flat tools.
Right now they are available in three designs. One of them, Floss Boss, comes in three colors. The minders come on a card in a clear plastic package. In addition, the company makes a floss skein lapel pin. I’d buy this as a magnet in a heartbeat.
I can’t wait to see more minders from them.
You can find them at Red Gate Stitchery’s Etsy shop.
