I’m a huge fan of items from IKEA. I’ve used many of them in my studio, home and in my kids’ apartments. I love their clean style and low prices. In today’s article I’ve gathered several ideas to use or modify IKEA items for your craft studio. All the links go to the IKEA products.
Needle Minder Storage
Use this metal board (it’s $10) to create stylish wall art to store you needle minder collection. I use an older version of Sodergarn in a drawer to store my magnetics because wall space is at a premium in my studio.
Window Seat & Storage
The Kallax cubes are iconic. This narrow tall set of four can be laid on its long side and put under a window. Add a long cushion to make a window seat. Buy insets from IKEA and other vendors to turn the cubes into storage.
Rolled Canvas Wall Storage
Variera is designed to be a dispenser for plastic bags, but those round holes are great to store rolled canvases. Depending on how mych wall space you have, you can have plenty of these. If you want color, roll the canvases painted side out.
Cloth Baskets to Store Threads
Use IKEA’s cloth baskets and drawer storage to store threads. The baskets are rectangular with a clear window and round (comes in a set of 2). There are tons of great small storage items at IKEA. Look to kids storage for the most colorful options
Mesh Cans for Canvas Storage
I use the Dronjons wastepaper basket to store many canvases that are rolled up. It’s a nice height so that the canvases are secure but not so high that you can’t see the canvases by peeking into the rolls.
Use these magnetic knife bars to store scissors and needles in packages (so they are easier to grab). These don’t take up much space and it’s easy to mount multiples. I like Fintorp, the back bar because it will be easier to see the needles against it. Kungsfor is the silver one.
Flat Storage for Canvases
If you prefer storing your canvases flat, think about Flyttbar, a toy storage chest. It’s pretty big, so you will want to create some interior dividers to make canvases easier to find. It’s good looking and certainly could easily be kept where it’s on display.
Closet Canvas Storage
The Lennkart wire mesh storage unit has three wire mesh drawers, is lightweight, and very inexpensive($15). For years I used two f these for my canvas. The drawers, a flat top and enough clearance underneath for more storage. It’s a great solution to for closets.
Moppe is an IKEA staple. It’s small enough to sit on a shelf or table and can be easily decorated. The drawers can be a bit hard to open, but it is a great storage unit.
Stitch Guide Holder
I hate balancing my stitch guide as I am working. If you do as well, consider Mojlighet, a metal phone stand. It looks like a minimalist piece of sculpture.
All these great ideas an I have not even considered furniture.
