Several years ago someone made a presentation to my guild about her lovely Christmas stockings. I was so impressed with the height of so many of her round items. She told us the technique she used was called padded cords. Unlike the more usual kinds of padding, this isn’t in layers. You use naturally round found objects (ropes, straws, toothpicks) to pad the area. These items are often much thicker than what you can get with layers of stitches.
Over it you stitch Gobelin to cover.
While I know how to do it in theory, a detailed tutorial has eluded me until now.
On the Hugs & Stitches blog, Suzanne Hicks has an absolutely wonderful post on how to do it.
