The Atomic Age is the graphic design term for those cool space-age graphics, illustrations, and everything else that caught our eyes before and during the Space Age. It’s playful, iconic, and easy to adapt to needlepoint.
That’s because it’s flat in color, making it good as a showcase for stitches, relatively undetailed, and full of great shapes. You can easily use these resources to create great needlepoint, especially if you are looking for pieces with a Mid-century Modern feel.
This fits in well with the popularity of robots, aliens, and spacecraft designs we are seeing from lots of folks. It gives you an easy way to create coordinating designs or to use these motifs as a background for one of these canvases.
One of my favorite resources for finding design elements for needlepoint is Creative Market. In a recent post on their blog, they reported on Atomic Age design as a trend to watch. Not only does it give a history of the period, but it also shows and talks about some iconic objects of the time, and it gives links to several resources available from them.
