I just love this little canvas from One Part Whimsy (available here). It comes in nine different colors. My plan for it is to frame it with a wide mat. The thread I have for the letters is a brilliant peacock blue Silk & Ivory, so I wanted to have a subdued background. This unidentified stranded silk from my stash is perfect. I used two strands.
The background is stitched in Oblique T, below. It’s related to the T Stitch but creates a much denser pattern and on with a neat texture. By using a plied and recombined thread, I got something that did a nice job of filling the space, while still allowing the canvas color to be a shadow, adding to the texture.

By looking at the stitched and unstitched sides of the canvas, you can see how dramatic the color change is.
The PO appears to have lost my threads. I hope they turn up this week. If not, next week there will be another small project showing a new background stitch.
