When you stitch needlepoint it’s important to have good coverage on the back. This protects the finished piece and helps keep the floating intersections of mono canvas in place.
Often, as we stitch we find that stitching straight along doesn’t give us good coverage. Let’s take the example of Satin Stitch Trellis, above. it has pairs of Straight Stitches.
How do we stitch it? If we stitch it as we would usually stitch it, going from left to right, the back will have longer stitches between the stitches in each pair and short diagonal stitches between pairs, below.
With the Backstitch method, you will make each stitch from the of the titch to the beginning, in other words, from right to left. The picture is a numbered diagram of a line of Backstitch.
If you make this stitch with this Backstitch Method, the back will look like the picture below.
In this blog, if you see the words “backstitch method,” it means stitch from the end of the stitch back to the beginning. You will also find that using this method works well for other titches, such as outlining stars.
