I was struggling with finding a background stitch for this cupcake ornament. The parents don’t know the sex, so I made the cupcake wrapper a bold pink and blue check. I did not want my background to detract from the wrapper and the heart buttons, but everything I tried clashed. That is until I tried this Open Squares Stitch, below. These squares with the corners missing are easy to see on the diagram. Stitched in ecru Etoile from DMC. I love how it turned out.
This stitch is going to look best if the squares don’t have traveling threads behind them. In order to accomplish this, stitch all the lines in one direction first, then all the lines in the other direction. You’ll love how great it looks!
The canvas is from Danji, with changes to colors, and the ornament frame is from Studio Decor.
