“Dandruff” is my name for those annoying white flecks of canvas that can show through your stitching. Not only do they make it look as if an area is improperly stitched, they also attract attention to themselves because they are so much lighter than the surrounding stitching.
THere are two kinds of dandruff. The first happens because the thread is too think for the mesh of the canvas. This can happen because the thread is too thin but it can also happen because the thread has no give, so it doesn’t puff up to fill the space.
The other kind of dandruff happens between rows of straight stitches. While the first is caused by the fiber and it can happen with any kind of stitch, the second can happen with any kind of thread and is most common when doing Straight Stitches.
In a recent post on canvas coverage, Joni Stevenson, talked about this problem and came up with some great solutions for it. In addition to the wonderful ideas, Joni has extreme close-up pictures, so you can really see both the problem and the solution.
