Quilty Bargello Mini-sock – Free Pattern

This year the Quilty Needlepoint Club (learn about it here) will focus on needlepoint versions of Amish quilts. But this wonderful color palette can do so much more. In this spirit here’s a free pattern for a Bargello mini-sock using these colors.

Combined with this simple Bargello swag, these bright colors make a lovely quilt. Bargello patterns when used for quilts are easy to adapt to needlepoint. I’ve done all the hard work and now you can just sit back and stitch this delightful free design.

The swag pattern is adapted by looking at the relative lengths of the patches. This translated to the pattern here.

A more difficult task is the color adaptation. The quilt has a sequence of 13 colors. That’s fine for something large but won’t work well on a small mini-sock. I cut down the number of colors to 9, with dark gray, coral, red, lavender, violet, medium and medium-dark green, medium light blue, and blue. I also liked the wide border so I added a cuff in navy with a medium light blue border.

The threads I used were Silk & Ivory, except for the navy, which was Vineyard Silk. The coral serves and important purpose because it is a more saturated color and brightens the entire piece.

I traced the LAS mini-sock pattern onto my canvas with a Pigma marker. Then I drew a line across the top about 3/4″ down for the cuff. The cuff would be a richer blue if it was colored with navy at this point.

I stitched a dark gray row somewhere near the center, beginning with the block of 6 stitches in the very center of the line. I stitched out to either end. Click on the picture for the full-size pattern. Do not put in the internal lines.

This becomes my base row and all the other rows follow it. After stitching the base row, stitch the light blue border beginning at the bottom of the cuff.

Fil in the rest of the mini-sock and the cuff. Your quilty bargello will be finished.
