At The Needleworks’ blog a new series called “Share a Stitch Sunday” started recently.
Colleen, the owner of this marvelous shop in Austin, TX, began with a delightful stitch (with several variations), The Baroness, created for her by Tony Minieri. Called The Baroness, it was used to stitch a lovely evening gown.
You’ll also see a wonderful close-up picture of the stitch. I love how swirly and elegant this stitch is.
The second stitch is Bucky’s Weaving, one of those great stitches that mimics a woven basket, but isn’t woven at all.
The stitch has two parts, straight stitches that form the woven part, and cross stitches that act as fill. Because of this it’s endlessly variable. You could do it, as Coleen has, in two threads, or you could use all one overdyed thread and make the stitch in three passes: vertical straight, horizontal straight, and crosses. That could really play up the woven aspect.
I’m now thinking of canvases for them. I’m thinking I’ll use the Baroness for Joseph’s cloak, my current Sunday project. Bucky’s Weaving will be perfect for the background of a Christmas piece that’s coming up.
