Last year when remodeling my office, I could not get at my thread stash. So I got a big shopping basket and put threads I had used there. I would root through the basket to find threads. I have not stopped doing this since.
But the basket is full, threads are tangled and I can’t find things. It’s a mess and is not, as the organizers say “bringing me joy.” I decided I had to put everything away.
The problem when there is so much is that it’s overwhelming. I decided I could only stand it in smaller bits. About a project bag’s worth at a time.
Here’s how I am proceeding.
- Start with an empty project bag and a trash can. Put them by the mess.
- Beginning with labeled, carded, and packaged threads where you know where they will go, fill the project bag.
- Put away these threads.
- If you keep some threads in a different place, grab another bag for them and fill that as you sort or put away.
- If you still have energy after one bag has been complete, refill the bag.
Repeat this process several times a day until you finish. I’m shooting for three times a day and the bag is visibly less full after just two days.
