Victorian Step is a great stitch. It’s outstanding for backgrounds. You can make it in straight or diagonal stitches. The stitch always has the same pattern: three short stitches followed by one long stitch.

You can also make it with diagonal stitches. Diagonal Victorian Step. The penguin’s face, pictured at the top of the article, is of this. I stitched it on 18 mesh with Flair. The stitch diagram is below.
Not only does this stitch look great, but it’s also one of those “big bang for your buck” stitches that looks harder to do than it is.
