I really love the charming mini Hummingbird House canvases that are distributed by Danji. You’ve seen several of the cupcakes in this series on background stitches. My latest project is this bee that will be finished as an ornament and the bee will be stitched in sparkly threads to look like a pin.
I wanted a background that would reflect this but would not overwhelm the bee. I decided to use a doubled strand of Treasure Braid Petite in a very pale yellow and a Blackwork stitch that creates open squares. It’s called Windowpane, below, and is really easy to stitch because it’s all straight lines.
There are some ways you can keep the centers of the squares open. First, always make sure your waste knots and thread ends are in a straight line from your stitching. Second, always be sure to stitch in straight lines only.
Keep your eyes open, this canvas will be available as a stitch guide in my Etsy shop in late November 2021.
