I remember the first time I saw River Silk’s ribbons that were speckled like bird’s eggs — they were so lovely! Acting similarly to overdyes when stitched, the advantage of speckled threads is that there are only little bits of color.
While there are very few threads you can buy that are this way, it isn’t hard at all to make your own. This tutorial from Fiber Artsy shows you how you can do it easily at home, using Kool-aid or other powdered drinks.
It’s oriented towards knitters and recommends wool yarns. Wool will give you the brightest colors. Silk, another animal fiber can also be used with excellent results. Planet fibers, such as cnd linen can also be used, but the colors will be lighter.
This is such an easy way to create unique yarns!
