Grace Cathedral, the Episcopal cathedral in San Francisco, sits on top of Nob Hill. Near the Fairmont and Mark Hopkins Hotel, the neo-Gothic cathedral is a fine piece of architecture. Like many churches and cathedrals, it has a collection of needlepoint kneelers.
Stitched mostly in Tent Stitch and using wool, the kneelers in the choir stalls feature birds of California. Recently they were the subject of a long article with many pictures from the California Audubon Society.
You’ll not only learn about these kneelers but the article also has a short history of needlepoint kneelers.
