Unless you do embroidery on cloth or Blackwork, you may not have heard this term. It refers to stitches that you use to fill a shape, sometimes outlined, with stitching.
Of course, for needlepoint, almost every stitch we do could be called a filling stitch.
The distinction between filling and outline continues in embroidery. Recently Mary Corbet has told us about 16 great filling stitches in her Needle n’Thread blog.
Some of these stitches might be familiar to you, others will be new. Almost all of them can be adapted beautifully for use on needlepoint canvas.
We often forget how so many free embroidery stitches can be made as counted stitches. They are always worth considering
