The patch in the bottom left corner looks, at first glance, like Alternating Scotch, but look again. Under the Scotches is a very large Cross Stitch, making this a Rice Stitch variation.
I call it Crossed Corners. You can really bring out the Cross by stitching it in a contrasting color. If you do this, the centers and corners will pop out, making a lovely dotted effect.
Begin by making the large cross, over 6 intersections. Once this is complete, tie each lego of the cross with a Scotch Stitch over 4 that leaves out the corner stitches. The two steps are shorn in the diagram below.
Because of the square shape and great texture of this stitch, it makes an outstanding border. It’s very easy to stitch, easier than many border stitches, is reasonably wide, and has a great texture. Try it in threads with strong directional light, as I did her, for even more variety.
Only three more patches until this lovely sampler is complete. Come back in two weeks for the next patch.

Thank you so much for the great information you give!
I really enjoy tour discussion of the different stitches. Could you please post another picture of the area of the crossed corner stitches? It was rather blurry to me and this looks like such a neat stitch. I want to use it on a project I’m working on.
Thank you,
Martha
