Last week Lord Libidan had a post about using dithering in cross stitch to keep things from looking flat.
This technique can also be applied to needlepoint. Let’s ta;l about what we see. In the second set of pictures on the top right you see how a sky could use a gradient of colors to add depth. In needlepoint, as in cross stitch, the transitions between the colors would be mde less harsh in needlepoint through needleblending or pixel shading, both forms of shading.
As you can see from the bottom two picturws in this set, one way to dither is to take the concept of pixel shading an extending it throughout more of the colored area.
The rest of the article talks about ways to add dithring to cross stitch and they are of less importance to us. I’m going to try this on the background of a canvas I hope to start soon.
