That’s a very common question and one that comes unquote often. Back in the old days when we mostly stitched with Persian Wool in Tent Stitch, most shops could estimate how much thread was needed just by using a thumb.
Today with so many different threads and with so many stitches, there isn’t a very good rule of thumb for estimating thread yardage.
The more exact, but time-consuming method is to stitch a swatch with specific lengths of thread. But often we don’t have time to do that.
