Cecelia Payne was a pioneering astronomer as well as a needlepointer. One of the most unique things she did was stitch needlepoint versions of supernovas. One even made it to the cover of Scientific American. You can learn about her & see more of her work in this post.
P.S. On a side note, these needlepoints use a pixelated image and Mosaic Stitch. You can do the same to adapt astronomical or other images. Just make one block of the pixelated image a square needlepoint stitch.
