New Ways to Use Christmas Needlepoint

Before the end of the Christmas season (February 2 traditionally) and before everything gets put away, I wanted to share with you some great ideas for using Christmas needlepoint. I love stitching small pieces and that means I have lots and lots of Christmas pieces. You might be in the same situation.

My whole family has needlepoint Christmas stockings. Our trees have plenty of needlepoint on them, but I still have lots to put out. I have had to become more creative with these.

The Needlepoint Wreath

Earlier this year I talked about these tiny Princess & Me nativity figures. I did not want to have them finished as stand-ups. Someone suggested a wreath, above. Because they are small, the wreath is 6″, but it could be any size. The ornaments could be any number but they should have a theme.

Have the ornaments finished with reasonably short hangers. Ideally, they should be thin and finished simply. Use an artificial wreath so you can move the branches if needed. Store the wreath & ornaments together.

Door Hangers

I have a few ornaments that are too big for our tree. I like to use them as door and cabinet hangers. The purse ornament pictured above hangs from a pair of cabinet knobs, but it could hang from a single pull, knob, or hook as well. If you have a series of hooks, hang ornaments of different lengths so it does not look so uniform.

The Ornament Jar & Bucket

If you have large glass jars, below, or decorative buckets, above, why not make them fit the holidays by adding needlepoint? The vintage bucket, which I bought at an antique store, normally just has pine cones. For Christmas, I added ball and half-ball needlepoint ornaments.

I also have this huge, heavy glass jar. Right now it has vintage Shiny Bites ornaments in it, but I’m looking to start needlepoint for it for next year. It sits on the floor and is a bright entrance to the room.

The Needlepoint Tree

You can show off your collection of needlepoint really beautifully with a minimal tree. This tabletop one is metal and round. Youl could also consider German Feather Trees and wooden dowel trees. Because these are open, they don’t get in the way of the ornaments. You can really pack them in and ll can be seen. My daughter came up with this idea last year and I love it. We made it a real centerpiece this year.

The Needlepoint Displays

Across from the needlepoint tree I have this little display. I have some items where I only have a few. I’ve grouped them together in this display along with some other items. By grouping them and including more usual seasonal items the Hob Nobb 3-d mice don’t look so out of place.

Christmas Pictures

Last, but not least, I have this display of two Christmas pictures and a nativity. Notice that these frames are similar in color, gold, and are highly textured. Both are also wide. Because of their similar qualities they go togwther even though the two needlepoints are not similar. They make a good backdrop.

Next year, I’m hoping to add a mini-sock garland over the entrance to the living room and perhaps more needlepoint nativities.
