The first Spring Needlepoint Market finished on Monday. Although we covered lots of new canvases in previous columns (here and here), there’s lots more to talk about.
Alice Peterson has licensed a great new artist, Chalk Art Love. Their designs feature plants and flowers inside simple outlines. Two states are available, Arizona and Texas, with plants that are common to each state. To their Stitch & Zip line they have a new design based on southwestern blankets. Another new artist for them is Krista Hill who has a wonderful New York City skyline canvas along with some great animal ornament rounds. They also have 20 new ornament rounds including a lovely Holy Family, a front door, and two canvases of elf feet.
Leigh’s newest series is called Fascinators. It has beautiful women in large hats. One, Desert Song, has a hat with an Indian Pot, a pueblo, and yucca flowers. They are elaborate, unusual, and really beautiful. One of Annie Lane’s newest canvases is for the Year of the Pig. It has her pig in a traditional Chinese outfit with a fan inside a pagoda. This is the Year of the Pig, but it’s also a clever idea for folks born in 1959, 1971, 1983, and 1995. Ashley Bradley has a new waffle bowl/sundae series. These needlepoint hot fudge sundaes have waffle bottoms, ice cream sauce, sprinkles, and even a cherry! Zecca has two new animal series, one set is tall and the other wide. Find animals such as foxes and snakes as well as dogs and cats.
Robbyn’s Nest was showing of a magnificent peacock rug with a tail that takes up almost half the rug. It also has wide borders that look like marble and agate. Associated Talents has new mini-stars, but my favorite new series from them is the roller animal ornaments. These have a vintage feel and are in soft colors. The animals (rabbit, bear, sheep, and elephant) have saddles and are standing on a wheeled platform. This would be such a great ornament series to do! Eye Candy has added new Halloween canvases, including a Halloween version of her cat houndstooth in black and orange. Among CBK’S new designs are ornaments based on vintage figures for Halloween and Christmas and a Halloween German Feather Tree.
Maggie Co has a new licensed artist, Terry Runyon. The whimsical designs feature animals and pets. My favorite has a dachshund in a sweater riding a bicycle with two cats and three birds as passengers. HSN now will make their college flags for any school. That’s great news for folks who want needlepoint from smaller or less well-known schools. Pajamas and Chocolate has added new animals to their patchwork animals line. The baby animals series includes a hippo, giraffe, camel, ostrich, and a toy elephant. The stitched models were full of interesting threads, bright colors, and great effects. Charley Harper has several great new bird canvases.
Tapestry Fair has lovely new animal canvases, including a great penguin and a goldfish. They also have a new series featuring “I don’t care bear,” including some ornaments. Colors of Praise has a new series of animals. The animals are simply sketched in white and taupe but each has elaborate and colorful saddles, blankets, and other decorations. Love You More has two new magnolia canvases seen against elegant striped background. Kangaroo Paw has extended their polka dot states outline series to include many cities and towns, not just college towns. Kristine Kingston has several new canvases with an Andy Warhol/pop art feel. They feature a zebra against solid color backgrounds. Because the white on the animal is replaced by the background color, it’s a cool almost optical-illusion. These are joined by new geometrics and ornaments.
Melissa Shirley has a new poinsettia Christmas basket and a series of Christmas houses that are available both singly and on a single canvas. For Easter she has old-fashioned bunny and duck couples and new eggs. There are new textbook-style biological illustrations including two magnificent mushroom canvases. They are joined by other depicting flowers, fruit, and animals. From Mary Lake Thompson there are some great new pet canvases and the line of small Vicki Sawyer birds has been extended. A new artist is Elizabeth Foster who has a delicate style featuring animals and woodlands. There are also plenty of new canvases from licensed artists.
Funda Scully has some great new hinged boxes, including a delicate and elegant nativity. Kelly Clark has a new 12 days series, this one inside bells. She also has four new damask Easter eggs. Kirk and Bradley has added new travel rounds, including Orlando and Palm Beach. They have also added Yorkshire Garden to the English Garden series. VNG has an adorable Easter canvas of four pastel (think Peeps colors) bunnies seen from the back. Sew Much Fun has a new Valentine’s cocktail canvas and has added animals to their patchwork samplers. I just love J Mahaly’s series of silly llamas, with sayings like “Pajama Llama.”
In new threads Silk Road Fibers has added new colors to Straw Silk: Dragonfruit, Purrink, Persian Blue, Jill’s Specs (blue), Black Forest, and Pine Forest. They will be shipping to shops this week. Threadworx has added new colors to several of their threads including floss, pearl, both types of silk, wool, and metallic. Some colors are new to the company and some fill in colors that were missing in some lines. My favorites were in the silks, a lovely cream and a rich old gold.
Look for more coverage next week on Monday and Thursday.
