One of my favorite background stitches is Byzantine Stitch. I love the look of it, and I love the way it creates an interesting texture. I also love how easy it is to vary.
I tried to for the Superfine Stitches canvas pictured above. Because there is so much background here, I used a Wide Byzantine, below, in Pepperpot Silk.
There are other Byzantines you might want to try for backgroundss. Irregular Byzantine, below, use Byzantines in several widths. Choose the width randomly to get the look.
Uneven Byzantine has different numbers of stitches on the vertical and horizontal faces. You can make the difference slight or large, You can also orient it so that the longer face is vertical, below top, or horizonal, below bottom.
You can also space out the rows as I did in the Exploded Byzantine, below. You can space the rows even further apart.
Try Byzantine; it’s a great background choice!
