Six-sided shapes, or hexagons, are wonderful things, but not exactly conducive to the square grids of needlepoint. They can make great backgrounds. One method I’ve used often is to create a Blackwork background of Hexes. But for many canvases, this may be too obvious a choice.
Sometimes you find the perfect stitch by accident, I planned to stitch Hesitation for the background on this tag, I stitched the main thread and left the second thread (for the shortest stitches) out. I liked the look, so I kept stitching.
The result surprised and delighted me — a subtle hexagon that was really easy to stitch1 I cal it Honeycomb Hesitation and I just love it. The diagram is below. The canvas is from Art Needlepoint. The stitch guide is available in my Etsy shop.
