In the US and Canada today is Opening Day of the baseball season. It’s a day many would like to see as a National Holiday. It’s also a great time to start some needlepoint.
I love to stitch while the game is on. The gentle sound of the broadcasters, the sounds of the crowd, and the relatively few commercials (for a sporting event) all combine to make something that helps me get into the lovely meditative state where I can happily stitch for hours.
To celebrate baseball, I want to point out some great baseball needlepoint.
Jody Designs has the perfect canvas for baseball purists, a baseball ornament. She also has several others in various settings. DeElda also makes a larger-mesh version in her line of beginners kits.
Kathy Schenkel has a baseball-themmed roll-up or a mini-sock. Julia’s Needleworks has a baseball figure in her line of sports silhouettes. It has a batter shown against a baseball.
If you are a Red Sox fan, KSH Designs has a version of “Keep Calm” just for you (scroll down to see it). Needlepoint, Inc. in San Francisco will also customize a “Keep Calm” canvas for your team. I saw the SF Giants one and it’s great.
The Collection has a great canvas of the American Flag using baseballs for the stars & stripes.
If you have a special team , look for canvases with team logos, such as this frog from Edie & Ginger, available in both National or American League. Painted Pony has a baseball angel.
If you love Stadiums take a look at the great canvases from Needlepoint Broad. You’ll find many: Shea Stadium, Wrigley Field, Old & New Yankee Stadium, Busch Stadium and more. You’ll also find great brick covers for baseball teams and a wonderful canvas of a game in progress.
Last but not least, you could make your own baseball quotable quote. Have the borders be red and stitched like a baseball. Besides the obvious, Play Ball! consider
- Batter Up
- You can look it up.
- There’s no crying in baseball.
- Baseball will break your heart.
That last one has been on my to do list for ages.
P.S. Props to you if you know the movies the middle two quotes come from.
