This week’s patch in the Color through Gold Sampler is one of my favorite stitches –Criss-cross Hungarian, below. It consists of three-stitch units that go in both directions. In the open spaces between the units you can have Cross Stitches (used here), Tent Stitches, beads, or sequins.
Although I didn’t do it here because I wanted a damask look, this stitch is perfect for the Color through Gold technique because you can bring in the color through the accent stitches. It will really look as if the color is peeping out from behind the gold stitches.
Criss-cross Hungaria is not only a really fun stitch to make, it is also a very flexible stitch. Done in one color, it can be a great background. Because the stitches go in both directions, the stitch is non-directional, meaning it can be used for areas of any size or shape. Just be sure you can fit in at least three complete repeats, otherwise it looks very confused.
For this patch I used:
- metallic ribbon
- non-metallic silk to match ribbon
This stitch is put into the patch closest to the center in the remaining two-patch arm.
Come back next week for some vintage charts! The next sampler patch is in two weeks.
