Compensation in needlepoint confuses many stitchers. Compensating Cross Stitches can be even more confusing.
Joni Stevenson, in her wonderful blog, has started a series on compensating Cross Stitches of various kinds. The first one covers basic Cross Stitch.
It shows you, with great close-ups such as the one pictured here, how different methods can affect the end result. If you adopt her simple tricks, you’ll stitching will immediately look better.
Even if you never do Cross Stitches, go visit this post. Further in you will find the best explanation I have ever seen on how to decide if an intersection should be part of your stitched area or not.
Even after 40+ years of stitching, I still hate making these “executive decisions,” so I’m taking her advice to heart.
