Patt Large designs both hand-painted (Pajamas and Chocolate) and giclee-printed (Patt and Lee) needlepoint canvases. She’s our guest poster today with her reflections on the difference between the two. She uses a design from her line that is available in both types to show the differences.
************
There are not many designs available from both our Patt and Lee giclee line and are Pajamas and Chocolate hand painted line so when you all asked to see the difference, it was hard to come up with a design that is carried on both sides. This wide eyed cat design is available from both lines. When a design is available from both lines, I generally do not make them completely similar, i.e., when painting, I may change some colors (which I did on this design)……..The first picture is the Patt and Lee version; the second, of course, the hand painted version.
What I mainly want you to see if the difference in the vividness of the designs…..I encourage people to choose a brighter thread than they will see on the Patt and Lee canvas………Also of note — if you look at the Patt and Lee “white” area in the cat’s eyes, they are on intersections. If you look at the registration (borders), you will note that horizontally it is on registration on the bottom, off half line on the top, off 1 line on the left and on the right. I have torn out areas of stitching to restitch as many as 3 times in the same area and the color was always there when I stitched that area for the second or third time……….
For around 1/2 the price of hand painted, we believe it is a great value, especially since you cover it with beautiful threads……….

Because needlepoint canvas is not perfectly square throughout, there will be places where color changes are not on the intersections. Having stitched many giclee canvases, this isn’t much of a problem. You will also find lines not on intersections often in hand-painted canvases. especially on curves.
