Needlepoint designer Lauren Bloch, who lives in my hometown of Pittsburgh, has a lovely special collection of needlepoint canvases, the GUB Series. The canvases, eleven right now (September 2021), are a collaboration between Veronica Schmerling and Lauren. Each is inspired by one of Veronica’s handmade cards. She started making the cards as therapy after her daughter Liz passed away from brain cancer in 2015.
The cards have been sold for 15 years and have contributed more than $50,00 to a scholarship fund named for Liz at Washington University in St. Louis. With any canvas purchased in this series, a portion of the proceeds is donated to the scholarship fund. The fund benefits rising seniors who are earning a Bachelor’s degree in architecture, Liz’s field of study.
The canvases are named GUB after Liz’s stuffed pet ladybug. More canvases are planned in this series. Almost all the canvases have great affirming messages.
The striped message canvases are on 13 mesh. The others are on 18 mesh. You can find them all on Lauren’s site and they can be ordered from your local shop.
