Written by a great UK stitcher and teacher, this book is an outstanding book for those loving and stitching Bargello. Unlike several of the recent books on Bargello, this book has correct suggestions for stitching and uses a variety of grounds and threads. Anyone who wants to start Bargello correctly and to stitch many easy and traditional designs will find lots to love in the book.
After a one-page history of Bargello, there are short chapters on tools and materials and on Bargello basics with clear explanations and pictures. Following this are the projects. Each one begins with a full-color picture of the project. The first page of instructions includes the project’s name, its level, and an extensive material list. The list divides items needed by type (fabric, threads, etc.) and includes things needed for finishing the project. Stitches used, including those needed for finishing, preparation steps before stitching, and finished size are also included here.
The next page has the instructions, with finishing instructions. It’s so rare to find these in any needlepoint book that it’s a very welcome addition. The clear instructions will make it easy to complete the project. In this section, there may also be close-up photos of a detail of the project as well as a picture of the completed piece.
After the instructions are the color chart(s) of the Bargello, depending on the size and complexity of the project, there may be several color charts. A color key for the project’s chart appears on the first chart page. Depending on the motif and the project’s size, there may be smaller charts of the motif. On the project’s full charts, the center lines are clearly marked. The only thing missing here are charts showing a single Bargello line, as is the case with most Bargello books. This would make it easier for many to stitch the projects.
I really like this book. It isn’t gimmicky. It doesn’t use a limited number of threads or grounds. It presents good solid information on this technique that works for all stitchers. Best of all, it updates traditional Bargello patterns with bright contemporary colors. With so few Bargello books in print, this one should be on your bookshelf.
