This week we’ll start stitching the flower, using the darkest shade of your flower color family. The base of the flower is stitched in Bullet, below. I have made the diagram in two colors to make the steps easier to see.

This stitch is layered so it is made in two steps. It’s easiest if you complete one stitch before starting the next. First, make a horizontal stitch going over four threads. Second, make a cross stitch two intersection long, go over the straight stitch, and cross over the center of it.
Stitched in a single color, it has an interesting bumpy effect. You can make the crosses really stand out by making them in a different color.
If you are making the pillow version of the flower, use the flower color’s lightest shade for the letters. Stitch them in Carolyn’s Tiny Stitch, below, a stitch from Carolyn Hedge Baird.
