Roman mosaics make compelling inspiration for needlepoint. You can find vintage books of charts adapting them to needlepoint, you can find projects doing the same (such as my Bath Mosaic).
Among my favorite Roman mosaics are the dogs from Pompeii. The folks at NeedlePaint have turned three of them into needlepoint. They have also written a great blog post about designing and stitching them.

are there any celtic books or needlepoint canvas ?
Janet M Perry says
There is one book on Celtic Needlepoint, probably out of print now, and there is one on Celtic Cross Stitch. For canvases, I know there are some from Art Needlepoint, but I can’t think of other ones off hand.
Keep stitching,
Janet
