Recently at the US Open, commentators called out a woman caught on camera knitting during the event. The ESPN broadcasters clearly didn’t pursue any fiber arts, nor did they understand why anyone would, horror of horrors, knit at this time.
The whole thing got Kerry Bogert’s dander up. She wrote a great post over at Interweave about why you should knit or crochet at sporting events. Substitute needlepoint for knit or crochet and its equally true for us.
I needlepoint at sporting events, at book club, and at lectures. I have found that every reason Kerry lists is true for me. It may seem weird to many in the US but it’s common in Europe where almost every adult woman does handwork in all these places. I have a pillow I call the “baseball pillow,” not because of the subject matter but because I stitched it entirely during my son’s games and practices.
Stitch proudly!
